From the Collection of Rare Editions at the Museum Library

The library of the First President’s Museum houses a collection of books, including many unique editions gifted by prominent public and political figures, world leaders, and writers. Today, we present one of these rare treasures.
Guillaume du Choul. A Discourse on the Art of Setting Up a Military Camp and the Military Disciplines of the Romans. – Lyon, 1555 (First Edition). In French.
This rare edition features a 16th-century full-leather binding with gold embossing and an engraved coat of arms on the cover. It includes a certificate of authenticity from the Simonetta Gribaldi Bibliographic Center.
Guillaume du Choul (1496–1560) was a French historian, antiquarian, and royal advisor known for his studies on ancient Rome. His goal was to popularize knowledge about antiquity through his works.
In A Discourse on the Art of Setting Up a Military Camp and the Military Disciplines of the Romans, he describes the structure of Roman legions, their tactics, and discipline, with particular focus on the logistics of organizing military camps. The book provides detailed insights into the architecture and strategic planning of Roman encampments. Additionally, the author explores physical training and exercises that Roman soldiers undertook to prepare for battle.
