On April 1 and 2 in Almaty, with the support of the Foundation of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan - Elbasy, the I International Conference on Pulmonology «Respiratory Junction Almaty: Where East meets West» was held. The platform for the scientific dialogue was the Kazakh National University, named after Al-Farabi.

Medical scientists from Kazakhstan, Canada, Kyrgyzstan and Germany discussed the causes and methods of treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This type of lung disease is characterized by shortness of breath, cough, sputum, and frequent colds.

Recall that the purpose of the conference is to exchange knowledge and experience between the leading experts of the East and the West on the most current pulmonary diseases.

The topic of the forum was not accidental because of the global increase in the incidence of lung disease, which burdens both patients and national health systems.

In the world, more than 300 million people suffer from COPD, which is 10% of the adult population of the Earth. According to forecasts of scientists, by 2020, mortality from COPD will increase, making it the third leading cause of death after coronary heart disease and stroke. But the disease can be prevented by taking urgent measures to combat the main risk factors - smoking and air pollution. By the way, the latter is especially important for the southern capital.

- This should not be the norm. As WHO proclaimed: dirty air is a violation of the human right to health. Need drastic measures to reduce exposure to harmful air. Without systematic solutions to these issues at the state level, one can predict significant economic damage to the health care system, and, of course, an increase in mortality from respiratory disease, said the dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Care of the Kazakh National University, named after Al-Farabi, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Zhanna Kalmatayeva.

During the conference, participants made scientific reports on the diagnosis of COPD in different countries, shared case studies on the experience of managing patients with this disease, and also discussed the professional methodology for studying lung disease.

Scientists have come to the general conclusion that, in addition to enhancing preventive work and regular exchange of experience in managing patients with pulmonary diseases, it is necessary to actively show citizenship on reducing the impact of polluted air.

The conference organizers expressed their intention to devote the event in 2020 to the topic of rare and congenital diseases of the respiratory system.
