Almaty hosts the First International Congress of Universities on the basis of Kazakh National University, named after Al-Farabi. A major event with the participation of representatives of the academic elite of world universities was organized by the Foundation of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan - Elbasy, G-Global International Secretariat, QS World Wide, KazNU named after Al-Farabi, ENU named after L. N. Gumilyov and the Ban Gi-Moon Institute for Sustainable Development.

 

A number of significant high-level events will be held within the framework of the Congress: QS World Wide Conference and Exhibition «To Perfection Based on the Grammies of Human Heritage and High Technologies», meeting of the General Assembly of the Silk Road University Alliance, first plenary session «The role of universities in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals - 2030 (SDG-2030)».

 

— It is symbolic that the QS World Wide International Education Forum is being held for the first time in Central Asia in our sunny city. After all, it was here that the higher school of our country was created and is successfully developing. Every third student in the country studies in Almaty. Kazakh universities debuted at QS World University Rankings 15 years ago. At that time, Kazakhstan was represented by only one university. All the following years, we did not lose time and in a short time our universities managed to make a breakthrough. By 2019, 10 of our universities were included in the ranking, 6 of which work in Almaty, - the governor of Almaty Bakytzhan Sagintayev said during the official part of the QS World Wide conference.

 

For the first time in world practice, several large-scale events with such an authoritative composition of participants are held simultaneously on the basis of one university. They are attended by over 800 academic leaders - university rectors, scientists and experts from more than 60 countries.

 

The rich three-day program of the Congress involves an expert discussion on the development of the competitiveness of domestic higher education and the export potential of educational services.

 

Addressing the heads of delegations and representatives of international organizations, Igor Rogov, the Deputy Executive Director of the Foundation of the First President, noted the following: «Following its mission, the Foundation of First President’s creates all conditions for the development and competitiveness of the nation. Over the past 10 years, the Foundation’s prize has been awarded to 258 representatives of science, culture and art. In August of this year, the Foundation, together with the Government, regional governor, the business community and NGOs, launched N. Nazarbayev’s initiative «El Umiti» aimed at finding, developing and supporting talented youth».

 

Rogov also added that the Foundation of Elbasy is launching a scientific and practical study with the goal of finding and identifying the most effective ways to increase competitiveness for the state within the framework of a socio-economic model of sustainable inclusive growth.

 

It should be noted that the holding of the Congress of Universities will contribute to the dynamic development of higher education in the country, attracting investment in this area, recognizing Kazakhstan and turning it into a Central Asian educational hub.

 

The first plenary session «The Role of Universities in the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals – 2030» held in the walls of KazNU will act as an international dialogue platform. It will be attended by the Deputy Executive Director of the Foundation of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan - Elbasy Igor Rogov, Senior Vice President of QS Quacquarelli Symonds Ltd from Great Britain Ben Souter, the First Deputy Head of the International Secretariat G-Global Murat Karimsakov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of France to the Republic of Kazakhstan Philippe Martine, Sungdong Hwan, Secretary General of the Silk Road University Network, Senior Advisor and Senior Researcher, Hungarian Institute of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Laszlo Vasa, the Director of the Institute of Digitalization and Computing Technology of Poland  Waldemar Wojcik.

 

Speakers note that in order to achieve the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), it is important that young people act as a vehicle of values and a driving force for sustainable development. In realizing this task, the role of universities as a center of knowledge and civilized values is high. In this context, universities become launching pads that determine the development path not only of each graduate, but also of the nation as a whole.
